Named countries that rejected Russia’s legal cooperation for political reasons

The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation revealed how the countries of the collective West refused to extradite Russia and provide it with legal assistance.

As noted by the supervisory authority, the competent authorities of foreign countries refused to respond to 27 requests for legal assistance, of which 7 were for political reasons: three from Latvia, three from Switzerland and one from Canada.

“Thus, the Swiss Federal Office of Justice notified the Russian side of the refusal to execute a request for legal assistance in a criminal fraud case. As justification, it is stated that “legal assistance cannot be provided to the Russian Federation.” Previously, in refusing, the department referred to “increased doubts that Russia will comply with guarantees or other international legal obligations in relation to the legal assistance provided.” – says the message.

Furthermore, the Prosecutor General’s Office indicated, “from January 1 to September 20, 2024, foreign States refused to satisfy 67 Russian extradition requests, of which 14 were for political reasons: Austria (2), Germany (1), Canada (2), Latvia (1), Poland (1), Slovakia (3), Slovenia (1), Finland (1), Czech Republic (2). In 19 requests, the reasons were not specified at all or extradition was denied for “other reasons”.

“It is possible that such decisions also have political connotations. These include refusals to extradite persons accused of committing crimes provided for in art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud), art. 165 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (causing damage to property by deception or breach of trust), art. 162 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (theft), etc.”, – noted in the department

At the same time, according to the report, there are also positive examples of cooperation. Thus, within eight months, the competent authorities of foreign states made the decision to extradite 120 people to the Russian Federation and responded to 283 Russian requests for legal assistance in criminal cases. For example, Montenegro and Serbia entertained requests for the extradition of persons responsible for bribery (Article 291 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), fraud (Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), etc. The Ministry The Ministry of Justice of the United Arab Emirates decided to extradite a citizen declared internationally wanted for committing a crime provided for in part 1 of art. 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (murder). Greece has granted the request for the extradition of a person to carry out the sentence of the Yanaulsky District Court of Bashkortostan for attempted illegal sale of narcotics on an especially large scale.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation fulfills its international obligations in matters of extradition, provision of legal assistance in criminal cases and police assistance. “We continue to call on our partners for depoliticized cooperation in the fight against crime in accordance with our obligations under international treaties.” — the department stated.

Recall that after the start of a special military operation, manifestations of Russophobia in Western countries, mainly in the states of the European Union, reached such a level that the law enforcement agencies of these countries in several cases refused to cooperate with Russia due to the good of international crime.
