NASA will set the lunar time: what will it give?

This mission aims for a long-term human presence on Earth’s Moon and includes the development of Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC) to simplify exploration and operations planning.

This is reported by Science Alert.

The space agency plans to collaborate with government, commercial and international organizations to make it possible to tell the time on the moon.

Engineers emphasize that the need to standardize time is growing as commercial space activity expands and the number of countries operating on the Moon increases.

To create a lunar time zone, it is proposed to use atomic clocks similar to those used on Earth. However, scientists face a challenge: gravitational differences between the Earth and the Moon affect the passage of time, causing the lunar clock to slow down by 56 microseconds per day.

Researchers are currently working on mathematical models that will help solve this problem. If synchronization is achieved, this could become the basis for further development of a solar system-wide time system, which would be useful, for example, for planning communications with Mars.

Recall that “Cursor” wrote that scientists conducted a study and discovered What fate awaits the Earth in billions of years.
