Nearly 14,000 passengers and 48 trains affected today by the Madrid derailment: “Tomorrow will be the same”

Nearly 14,000 travelers and 48 trains linking Madrid to eastern Spain were affected this Sunday by the derailment of a medium-distance train which High-speed tunnel collapsed which connects Atocha to Chamartín this Saturday.

As explained by Renfe General Director of Business and Operations, Óscar Gómez Barberothe derailed train has not yet been able to be removed from the track, so the situation tomorrow is expected to be “similar”. In other words, travel to the east of Spain, mainly to the Valencian Community and Murcia, continues to be suspended.

In a public appearance, Gómez acknowledged that tickets would not be sold for this Monday in order to relocate some of those affected. “22 trains had to be canceled and the heads of 26 others were affected,” said the general director.

Thus, all trains that have not been canceled will see their departure point at Chamartín, the station from which medium and long distance trains depart to the east of the country, modified until Atosha. The goal, as this newspaper has already reported, is to avoid going through the high-speed tunnel that connects the two stations and which is disabled by the damaged train.

Regarding the expected date of the removal of the locomotive that blocks this important road, Cercanías does not want to give a date. “We don’t know,” the director general repeatedly insisted when asked by the media.

What is clear is that the train has not yet been withdrawn and that, until then, there will be no possibility of a return to normal on the medium-long distance route.
