The director of the CIA, William Burns, presented a new plan to resolve the situation in the Gaza Strip in the negotiations in Doha, reports the AXIOS portal citing Israeli sources. The proposal calls for a 28-day truce between Israel and Hamas, during which a hostage exchange would be expected: eight Israeli citizens detained in Gaza, including men and women over 50, would be exchanged for several dozen Palestinians serving time in Israeli prisons for terrorist activity.
The objective of this proposal, as explained by the sources, is to restore dialogue and get the negotiations out of the prolonged stalemate. Previously, representatives of Israel and Hamas could not reach a compromise, as their positions on the issue of ceasefire and the conditions for the exchange of hostages radically diverged.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu previously expressed his willingness to adopt temporary ceasefire measures, but emphasized that a complete cessation of hostilities is only possible under conditions that do not harm Israel’s national security. Hamas, in turn, insists on the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip and the end of the war.
According to the media, hope for the implementation of this initiative is partly based on changes in the leadership of Hamas associated with the death of one of its leaders, Yahya Sinouar. Israeli sources believe that this development could persuade Hamas to accept more moderate terms of the agreement, which in turn would contribute to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
Previously, Kursor reported that the State Department noted that Israel took into account Biden’s recommendations and avoided attacks on Iran’s nuclear and oil facilities.
