As things progress, this week I attended Teresa Ribera’s hearing at the European Parliament and Begoña Gómez’s appearance before the Madrid Assembly Commission of Inquiry. And in both cases, I wanted at any moment the interviewees, Ribera and Gómez, to complain saying “I didn’t expect the Spanish Inquisition”, and for the doors to suddenly open and Monty Python bursts in dressed as a cardinal and shouting “No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!”, just like in the legendary skit.
The comic turn would have been the only way to worthily save two such low moments in our recent politics. Either way, both will stick around for our particular, already fraught story of infamy.
