According to the Israeli army radio, the cancellation came after Sharafit’s report had written an article criticizing US President Donald Trump as well as participating in the protest of Netanyahu’s judicial reorganization in 2023.
The Prime Minister’s office said Netanyahu had told Sharafit that he was reconsidering the appointment and would seek other candidates for that position.
“The Prime Minister thanked him for responding to the duties, but, after greater consideration, he decided to explore alternative options,” the statement said.
Sharafit’s candidacy was announced a few hours before the report began to emerge on his political position in the past.
According to the Israeli media, he participated in demonstrations against Netanyahu’s judicial reform plan, which led to massive protests throughout Israel in 2023.
In addition, Sharafit supported the maritime border agreement in 2022 between Israel and Lebanon, an agreement of the previous government that opposed Netanyahu at that time.
Trump’s allies reaction
Sharafit’s political attitude also attracts criticism from the leaders of the United States (United States) near Trump.
Former Navy Commander signed an opinion criticizing Trump’s climate policy, which led to a strong reaction by US senator Lindsey Graham, a loyal ally of Trump.
“Although it is undeniable that America has no best friends than Israel, the appointment of Eli Sharvit as the new leader Shin Bet is very problematic,” Gram said in his account.
