New charges have been brought against Kocharyan in Armenia

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia indicted the country’s second president, Robert Kocharyan (1998-2008), the former chief of the General Staff of the Armenian army, the former secretary general of the CSTO and the former head of the Yerevan garrison, Yuri. Khachaturov, of exceeding his duties and causing serious consequences due to negligence.

Oku.Az TASS reported on this.

We are talking about the events of March 1, 2008, when clashes occurred between security forces and the opposition in Yerevan, in which 10 people were killed and hundreds were injured. The former president and the former head of the capital’s garrison have already been indicted in this criminal case and accused of “overthrowing the constitutional structure”, but the Constitutional Court of Armenia declared in 2021 that this decision is against the Constitution.

In September this year, the Court of Cassation of Armenia made the decision to continue this criminal case based on several articles of the country’s Criminal Code.

The former president himself stated in his statements to journalists that he considers this trial as “violence against justice.”
