Bolivia joins the South African process against Israel in the International Court of Justice
Bolivia joined the process initiated against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) by South Africa, which alleges that the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip violates the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Suppression of the Crime of Genocide, announced the court. Wednesday.
Colombia, Libya, Spain and Mexico had already joined this procedure against Israel, which vehemently denies the accusations.
Bolivia announced in November the breaking of its diplomatic relations with the Jewish State due to what it described as attacks “disproportionate” in the Gaza Strip. Israel had denounced a “Capitulation to terrorism”.
In a January 26 ruling that made headlines around the world, the ICJ called on Israel to do everything possible to prevent any acts of genocide during its military operations in Gaza. The court also ordered Israel to guarantee a “unhindered access” to investigators charged by the UN to examine accusations of genocide.
South Africa has approached the ICJ several times, arguing that the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip was forcing the court to issue new emergency measures. “Israel’s genocidal war continues and the court’s decisions remain a dead letter for Israel”Bolivia underlines in its request made public on Wednesday.
Although ICJ decisions are legally binding, the court has no concrete means to enforce them. In July, the ICJ issued an advisory opinion in a separate case that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory was “illegal” and had to stop as soon as possible.
