New power outage leaves the island of Cuba without electricity again

The Electric Union of Cuba reported this Saturday another power outage that left the island without electricity again and thwarted attempts to implement an “island” system to restore the previous power outage, recorded Friday.

At 6:15 a.m. a new total blackout occurredof the national electro-energy system“, reported the Electric Union of Cuba in a press release. “The Electric Union is working on its restoration,” it explains.

The Director of Electricity of the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Cuba, Lázaro Guerra, previously reported a process of restoration of power supply after Friday’s power outage that left the entire island without electricity.

“Right now we have microsystems in all provinces, except Artemisa, which have limited power and reach nearby consumers,” Guerra explained in statements on Cuban television.

The engineer explained that to synchronize each of the thermal units microsystems have been put in place (islands) with the distributed production groups of the territories, which will provide energy to the thermoelectric plants. Generators close to thermal blocks have priority, he noted.

They are working on this plan “qualified forces and specialists” in all territories, with the aim of doing everything as quickly as possible.

While, The Electric Union of Cuba urged the population to moderate their consumption. “Consumers who have the service are asked to limit their consumption to what is necessary since customers are served with very little electricity,” he noted on his Telegram channel.

Cuban official media recalled that the facilities, systems and services of Cuba’s international airports have their own emergency electricity production and maintain their usual operation, while trains also maintain their usual schedule.

Also Measures are in place to guarantee the partial operation of Havana’s public transport with the use of generators to power the different means of transport.

The authorities have energy emergency declared and the Ministry of Education suspended classes, although it said this was due to the storms that have hit the island since Thursday.

In September 2022, a similar situation occurred after Category 3 Hurricane “Ian” hit the western end of the island. Recovery took several days.
