New ship collision in the Strait of Gibraltar, which ended without injuries or spills

New alert in the Strait of Gibraltar due to a collision between two ships although, fortunately, on this occasion it remained that way and the maritime accident ended without injuries and without causing spills into the sea. One of the ships had unloaded just a few days ago 147,000 tons of crude oil in Cartagena.

It happened after five a.m. on Tuesday 8.9 miles southeast of the Bay of Algeciras, in Cadiz. He oil tanker “Gloria Maris”, with 25 crew members on board, and the container ship ‘HMM ST Petersburg’, with 24, collided.

The Coordination Center Rescue of Tarifa managed the alert and mobilized its ships ‘Luz de Mar’ and ‘Salvamar Denebola’ to the scene of the incident.

The crews of the two ships, after checking that there were no injuries, inspected the areas of the collision, observing damage to lateral structures of the two ships, but without risk of sinking or spilling of the cargo.

The Maritime Captaincy of Algeciras ordered its maintenance to carry out routes inspections by its security operators in an attempt to clarify the causes of the collision and verify the security situation of the ships on board.

The “HMM ST Petersburg”, which was heading towards the port of Algeciras, docked at the exempt quay of these port facilities, where it will be subject to an inspection by the Maritime Captaincy. If everything is correct, you will go to TTIA container terminal of said dock.

As for the “Gloria Maris”, it was moored at the anchorage A of San Roque. The latter ship left Cartagena on November 30 at two a.m. without cargo and bound for Gibraltar, after unloading 147,564 tons of crude oil. Sources consulted by ABCthe tanker had left Gibraltar before the incident.

This is the second shock in the strait in just a few weeks. On November 1, the “Southern Puma”, a Liberian-flagged tanker, and the bulk carrier “Louisa Bolten”, sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands, collided and there was a small paraffin spill. No injuries were reported either.
