New wolf census increases number of packs in Castilla y León by 8 percent, to 193

He new regional census of the Iberian wolf 2022/2023 reflects an increase in herds of 8 percent throughout Castilla y León, where studies carried out have confirmed the presence of 193 herdsagainst the 179 of the previous one. An even higher increase in the south of the Duero, where increased by 30 percent.

This was announced on Tuesday by the Minister of the Environment, Housing and Regional Planning.Juan Carlos Suárez-Quiñonesaccompanied by the Director General of Natural Heritage, José Ángel Arranz, and the Head of the Flora and Fauna Department, David Cubero.

It’s a given “very good from a conservation point of viewn of the species”, emphasized Quiñones, and of a work carried out with “a broad participation of professionals which reflects that they are “herds with evidence”, therefore “There may be more, but not less.”

An increase in both the number of herds and “as an extension of the wolf activity and camping areas”, whose presence has even been confirmed in territories where it has not been seen for years, such as Extremadura, where a herd jumped from Ávila.
