Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded for the discovery and research of microRNA

American scientists Victor Ambrose and Gary Ravkan won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2024. This was reported by the official account of the prize on the social network.

The scientists received an award for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation.

The Nobel Committee noted that the laureates “discovered microRNAs, a new class of small RNA molecules that play a fundamental role in gene regulation.”

“Their revolutionary discovery revealed a completely new principle of gene regulation that turns out to be very important for multicellular organisms, including humans.” – the committee said in a statement.

Gene regulation by microRNA, first discovered by Ambros and Ravkan, has been at work for hundreds of millions of years, enabling the evolution of complex organisms. Thanks to genetic research, it is now known that cells and tissues do not develop normally without microRNA.

The scientists will share a prize of 11 million crowns (about $1 million).

As reported EADailya year earlier, the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology went to scientists catalin kariko (Hungary) and Drew Weissman (United States) for discoveries related to nucleoside base modifications that have allowed the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19.”
