The DPRK has test-fired a new type of 600mm multiple launch rocket system (MLRS), with DPRK leader Kim Jong-un present at the tests, the DPRK Central Telegraph Agency (KCNA) reports.
According to the agency, the defense industrial enterprise of the Second Economic Commission of the DPRK has developed and produced a new type of 600mm multiple launch rocket system, the characteristics of which have been improved in accordance with the needs of military operations.
“Kim Jong-un… attended the test launch of the… new 600mm multiple launch rocket system,” – the agency said in a statement.
According to KCNA, the tests were successful and were aimed at further improving the MLRS control system as well as testing its combat effectiveness. The agency adds that the MLRS projectiles hit a target on an island in the Sea of Japan.
Earlier, News1, citing the South Korean military, reported that North Korea allegedly launched two to five short-range ballistic missiles from an ultra-large 600mm KN-25 MLRS on Thursday. This is the first ballistic missile launch by North Korea since July 1, when a missile was allegedly launched from the KN-23 system. Also on August 27, North Korea tested a new 240mm multiple launch rocket system.
