US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he was not aware of the planned Israeli attack on Beirut and that he discussed the situation with his Israeli counterpart only after the operation began.

“We did not receive any advance warning. As you know, it has only been a few hours since the attack and its results are still being evaluated,” Austin said.
He is known to have repeatedly expressed fears that an all-out conflict between Hezbollah terrorists and Israel would have serious consequences for both sides, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic efforts. He noted that a full-scale war must be avoided and emphasized that diplomacy remains the best way to return evacuated Israelis and Lebanese to their homes.
