At least one person dies after cargo plane crash this morning against a house near Vilniusthe Lithuanian capital, reported LTR, the country’s official television.
The accident occurred on 05:30 local time (04:30 GMT) on Monday when a plane coming from the city of Leipzig (Germany) crashed near the Lithuanian capital.
A two-story private house caught fire, but no ground casualties were reported.
“A crew member has been found no vital signsand two others were rescued and taken to hospital,” said Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the country’s National Crisis Management Center (NKVC).
According to the mayor of VilniusValdas Benkunskas, the plane flew through the house compound and crashed into the yard. “The 12 residents of the house are safe and have been evacuated,” he added.
The plane Boeing 737-476 (SF)operated by a DHL subcontractor, was on a flight from Leipzig to Lithuania and official sources said the causes of the accident were still under investigation.
Vilnius Airport continues to operate normally, although some flights have been delayed and a plane to Riga (Latvia) has been canceled.
