Florida is bracing for one of its worst hurricanes yet. Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall in the coming days, likely Thursday. More than a million residents have received evacuation notices warning of “catastrophic” damage and power outages that could last for days.
As of Tuesday morning, Hurricane Milton had weakened slightly and is now classified as a Category 4 storm, down from its peak level reached last night. The hurricane will hit Florida’s west coast just weeks after Hurricane Helen, which killed more than 200 people in Florida and other states. Helen is considered the deadliest hurricane to hit the United States since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Milton is forecast to impact the Tampa Bay region, home to more than three million people, according to the US National Hurricane Center. Currently, work continues in Florida to eliminate damage caused by Hurricane Helen.
Hurricane Milton is packing winds of about 168 mph (270 km/h) and is expected to hit the Florida coast with gusts reaching 145 mph (233 km/h).
