One of the US states is preparing for a catastrophic hurricane: more than a million Americans must evacuate

Florida is bracing for one of its worst hurricanes yet. Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall in the coming days, likely Thursday. More than a million residents have received evacuation notices warning of “catastrophic” damage and power outages that could last for days.

As of Tuesday morning, Hurricane Milton had weakened slightly and is now classified as a Category 4 storm, down from its peak level reached last night. The hurricane will hit Florida’s west coast just weeks after Hurricane Helen, which killed more than 200 people in Florida and other states. Helen is considered the deadliest hurricane to hit the United States since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Milton is forecast to impact the Tampa Bay region, home to more than three million people, according to the US National Hurricane Center. Currently, work continues in Florida to eliminate damage caused by Hurricane Helen.

Hurricane Milton is packing winds of about 168 mph (270 km/h) and is expected to hit the Florida coast with gusts reaching 145 mph (233 km/h). The storm is enhanced by the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and is one of the fastest growing hurricanes in the Atlantic, transforming from a tropical storm to a hurricane in just 24 hours.

Also noteworthy is the unusual movement of “Milton”: he moves from west to east. Normally, hurricanes that form in the Caribbean move west and then turn north. Jonathan Lynn of Cornell University explained to Reuters: “It is extremely rare for a hurricane to develop in the western Gulf of Mexico, move east and then land in western Florida. This has serious consequences because the path of the hurricane plays a critical role. to determine where the storm surge will be strongest.”intense.”

The National Hurricane Center forecasts storm surges of 3 to 4.5 meters north and south of Tampa Bay. Jamie Roham, from the centre, said Milton was expected to strengthen before making landfall, with hundreds of kilometers of coastline at risk of becoming high-risk areas.
