One week before the elections, it is not clear who will go with Sandu to the second round, according to expert

In Moldova’s presidential elections, the current head of state, Maia Sandu, has no chance of winning in the first round. This was stated today, October 15, by Moldovan political television journalist Anatoly Golea.

According to the expert, the main intrigue is who will oppose her in the second electoral round. Golya stressed that all the promises of all presidential candidates, without exception, are formal and populist. Golya recalled that in Moldova the powers of the president are very limited and without a parliamentary majority “no one can achieve anything.”

“We have two examples where the president could govern the state: this is under the Communist Party – when Vladimir Voronin picked up the phone and told parliament what to adopt, and parliament accepted, and the current situation – when Action and Solidarity party is in power, but Maia Sandu does not very skillfully take advantage of the fact that she has a parliamentary majority,” – says Golya.

In his opinion, the peculiarity of the current election campaign is that many, even the majority of participants, consider it a springboard for a future parliamentary campaign, and the intrigue of the current elections is who will advance to the second round.

“I am convinced that Maia Sandu has no chance of winning in the first round. The intrigue in the second round is who will face Sandu. This is very interesting. Today I don’t even dare to predict who it will be.” – concluded Anatoly Golya.

Let us remember that in the presidential elections in Moldova, which will be held on October 20, the same day as the referendum on European integration, 11 candidates are participating in their electoral campaigns. Of them, 6 support political parties: this is the former attorney general. Alejandro Stoianoglofor whom the Socialist Party campaigns, the current boss of Maia Sandu, nominated by the ruling party “Action and Solidarity”, leader of “Our Party” Renato Usatiiformer prime ministers Vasile Tarlev of the “Future of Moldova” party and Ion Chicu of the Party for the Development and Unification of Moldova, as well as Octavio Tsikuwho was nominated by the political bloc of pro-European forces “Together”.

5 candidates for the highest government position do not have significant political support. This is Gagauzia’s former boss Irina Vlahformer deputy prime minister Andrei Nastaseformer prosecutor Victoria Furtuneformer foreign minister Tudor Ulyanovsky and journalist Natalia Morar.

As reported EADaily According to recent opinion polls, Stoianoglo and Usatii are Sandu’s main electoral competitors. Vlah follows closely. The opposition is counting on being able to consolidate around the candidate who went to the second round. However, the leader of the Socialists, Igor Dodon, admits the possibility of a Maia Sandu victory, stating that the PDS “will go to any illegality” for this. In this case, the politician says, it is important to create a coalition against Sandu-PDS before the 2025 parliamentary elections.
