Orihuela City Hall rejects request to cancel Francoist trials against Miguel Hernández

The Town Hall of Orihuela, the town of Miguel Hernández, has refused to request a mistrial of the Franco regime against the poet, with the voices of the PP and Vox. The motion was presented by the PSOE, and the popular tried to modify it by removing allusions to the Republic and Francoism.

At the start of the plenary session, both in the PSOE motion and in the PP amendment, There appeared to be no discrepancy. Socialist councilor Carolina García said the group: “expresses its full support for the request of the family of Miguel Hernández.” For his part, the Councilor for Education, Vicente Pina, confirmed: “The Orihuela City Council, in fullagrees first: to add his voice to that of the family of Miguel Hernández.”

However, upon arriving the question of Francoism a change in discourse is clearly beginning to be felt. García declared: “For the annulment of the legal proceedings opened against him, during the Franco dictatorship. While Pina replied: “So that the government of Spain cancel the legal proceedings opened against him.

In fact, the PSOE highlighted the literary figure of Miguel Hernández and the one persecuted by the Franco dictatorship. On the other hand, the PP did not refer to the historical context in its amendment, it only highlighted its work. García expressed: “His courage and commitment brought him object of Francoist persecution”. Pina attacked: “He is one of the most emblematic figures of poetry and the Spanish language and a symbol of the fight for freedom and justice.”

When it came to voting for the deletion of two Francoist summaries which condemned the poet Oriolano to death, the PP voted against and so did Vox, its partner. The reason Vox voted against it is because, according to them, the only thing they are favoring with this The movement is resentment among the Spanish. For its part, the PP defends that it is “partisan”they therefore prefer the amendment which avoids historical facts: that in addition to being a poet, Miguel Hernández fought in the Civil War on the republican side and was a communist political commissar.

In rejecting the vote, the socialists focused on vetoing the motion which, according to them, agreed with the the poet’s own family.
