EH Bildu began its third congress today, which will last until February 8, to renew Arnaldo Otegi as head of the party leadership. Its current general coordinator, candidate for re-election, spoke at the Political Conference held in Tabacalera, San Sebastian, where he described his socialist and independence project as “a story of political success.”
The event aimed to vote on the regulations that will guide the internal renewal process that the formation is facing, although without a foreseeable change of face, by next year. Otegi took the opportunity to file a complaint against the State of Autonomies and committed to implementing “anti-neoliberal” policies from his positions in the public administration.
“We are not here to defend acronyms, we are here to defend projects that can facilitate national freedom,” he said about the Basque Country. According to Otegi, the relationship established by the current territorial model is a failure: “The time for coffee for all is over.” And he demanded a new “statute” that recognizes the “national rights” of the region.
The reality is that the debate has been open since the beginning of the legislature in the autonomous community before the summer. The PNV and the Socialist Party of Euskadi (PSE) committed, in their government pact, to exploring “autonomy” and a new Statutory Pact. Bildu has since raised the level of its demands, insisting on its old claim of the “right to decide”. An issue that the PSOE has ruled out evaluating, but not the PNV, which is also about to begin a process of internal renewal next Sunday 29.
