The British are outraged, many considering the costs of Charles III’s coronation to be simply “obscene”. The Guardian reports this.
According to official figures, the total cost of the event in honor of the new king amounted to a whopping 72 million pounds, of which 21.7 million for the ceremony and another 50.3 million to cover other expenses. The information is provided with reference to the country’s Department of Culture, Media and Sports. But opponents of the monarchy argue that this amount could be even higher.
The coronation was described in state media as “a once in a generation moment”that allowed “The whole country comes together to celebrate” and provided “a once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate, strengthen national identity and showcase Britain to the world”. But these words are opposed by members of the anti-monarchist group Republic, who affirm that the coronation was “unacceptable” waste of taxpayers’ money.
According to the group leader Graham SmithThe actual cost of organizing the event could be between £100 million and £250 million.
“But even £72 million is incredible. “It is huge, it was spent on a parade for one person when there is no legal obligation to hold a coronation and we are all facing cuts.” Smith said in an interview with The Guardian.
