Nearly half of 216 deaths due to DANA In the province of Valencia, according to the latest official data provided this Thursday, they are concentrated in four municipalities: Paiporta (45), Catarroja (25), Valencia capital (16) and Alfafar (15).

Of the total number of deaths, 104 were over 70 years old and 26 were foreignersof 11 different nationalities, according to the latest report from the Data Integration Center (CID) published by the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV).

To this figure we must add others 16 missingwhose bodies have not yet been found, two weeks after the torrential rains which overflowed the Poyo ravine and flooded more than fifty villages.

If the death of these 16 missing people were finally confirmed, the Valencia tragedy would have cost the lives of 232 people in total.

That would cause the flood the fourth deadliest natural disaster recorded in Europe so far this century, after the devastating earthquake in Turkey last year (51,000 deaths) and the two earthquakes in Italy: in L’Aquila, in 2009 (309 deaths) and in the center of the country in 2016 (299).

The wrath of nature was unleashed on Valencia on October 29, 2024leaving in its wake a map of destruction and desolation. The province, plunged into chaos by the heavy rain and floodingnow faces the colossal task of rebuilding and looking to the future with hope.

Two weeks after the largest DANA of the century in Spain, the first detailed analysis of the 216 deaths recorded until the closing of this edition in this disaster has been published.

Most of the houses destroyed by the force of the water were one or two stories high. These are traditional houses typical of the Valencian Community and this type of housing is found in many towns in the zero point of Valencia.

The vast majority were occupied by elderly people with mobility problems, which is why the oldest population was most affected.

The municipalities where the greatest number of dead have been found are Paiporta (45), Catarroja (25), Valencia (16), Alfafar (15), Massanassa (11), Benetússer, Torrent and Picanya10 in each of these last three. The victims appeared 28 Valencian municipalities.

This is the number of victims caused by the rainfall of October 29 only in the province of Valencia, with record rates, never seen in Spain.

The rains overflowed rivers and ravines which flooded and devastated towns, mainly those in the L’Horta Sud region, which borders the Valencian capital, but also others such as Algemesí, Chiva or Utiel.

In total, there are 88 municipalities more or less affectedaccording to data from the Integrated Operational Coordination Center (Cecopi).

Up to 20 legal instancesbelonging to ten different judicial districts (Sueca, Torrent, Quart de Poblet, Mislata, Valencia, Llíria, Catarroja, Alzira, Carlet and Requena) have opened preliminary proceedings for the deaths of the 216 deaths recorded so far.

Ages and gender

Thus, of the total number of deaths recorded in the CID, 131 are men and 85 women, 190 were of Spanish nationality and 26 others had eleven different nationalities, the majority of Romanian origin, with nine deaths, according to the report. By age, a total of 104 people are 70 years old or older: 15 are 90 years old or older; 52 people aged 82 or over and 37 people aged 70 or over, at least six lost their lives in a residence in Paiporta.

Most of the victims were found in Paiporta, a municipality completely devastated by water, where 45 bodies were found.

In Catarroja, 25 people were located; in Valencia, capital 16; 15 in Alfafar; 12 in Massanassa; 10 in Benetússer, Picanya and Torrent; 9 in Sedavi; 8 in Chiva; 7 in Cheste and Quart de Poblet.

6 others were in Aldaia, Riba-roja and Utiel; four in Godelleta; 3 in Algemesí and Albal; 2 in Guadassuar and L’Alcúdia and 1 in Sueca, Sot de Chera, Silla, Loriguilla, Buñol, Alzira and Alaquàs.

Missing

Autopsies have already been carried out on these 216 people and all are also perfectly identified.

Of the 216 identifications, 168 were produced through fingerprint analysis and 45 by DNAwhile three cases correspond to an identification in the hospital during his lifetime.

The offices authorized by the National Police and Civil Guard Working with medical examiners, they currently have 16 active files of missing persons reports, according to Wednesday’s data.

The CID is a technical body composed of a Forensic Office and an Office of State Security Forces and Agencies, with specialized agents from the Civil Guard and the National Police.

The main function of this office is to collect and supervise the various identification reports carried out by the different institutions.
