Palencia takes to the streets to honor its patron saint, San Antolín

Palencia celebrated this Tuesday, September 2, the Feast of San Antolín, patron saint of the city, in which the Vice-President of the Council and Councilor for Family and Equal Opportunities, Isabel Blanco, and the rest of the authorities participated. The Procession of the Saint took place at the doors of the Cathedral, an act that ceased to be carried out at the end of the 80s and that the diocese of Palencia wanted to recover by 2024.

It was the Bishop of Palencia, Mikel Garciandía, who was in charge of receiving the authorities who arrived at the Plaza de la Inmaculada accompanied by representatives of the clubs and many faithful of Palencia. From there, with the silver image on its 18th century litter and the work of the Salmancan goldsmith Luis García de Coca, they paraded to the interior of the Seo to begin with the Holy Mass, presided over by the Bishop and sung by the Chapel. At the end of the Eucharist, they visited the chapel of San Jerónimo where the altar with the relics of San Antolín is located and participated in the traditional distribution of water from the crypt for which the diocese prepared 6,000 glasses.

It is worth remembering that the Crypt only opens its doors on September 2nd and that going down to drink its water is one of the most deeply rooted gestures in the city’s great festivals since, according to legend, it contains healing properties.
