Several tens of thousands of demonstrators against Emmanuel Macron’s “coup” following the appointment of Michel Barnier

Two days after Michel Barnier’s appointment in Matignon, a part of the left demonstrated against the new prime minister and, above all, against “The coup de force of[Emmanuel] Macron », according to the motto of the 150 processions that set out on Saturday 7 September, called by youth unions and left-wing parties, including La France insoumise.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, some 110,000 people demonstrated across the country. In Paris, 26,000 demonstrators, according to the Paris Police Prefecture, and 160,000 according to La France Insoumise, marched between the Place de la Bastille and Place de la Nation. A mixed figure despite the presence, at the head of the procession, of the “rebel” leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon. There were also ecologists, such as Benjamin Lucas-Lundy, MP for Yvelines, and communists, such as the senator for Paris Ian Brossat. Everyone is outraged that the candidate of the New Popular Front (NFP), Lucie Castets, was not named in Matignon. The Socialist Party was not present despite the fact that the NFP, which accuses Emmanuel Macron of “denial of democracy”has already promised to table a motion of censure against Michel Barnier’s government in the National Assembly.

Outgoing Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is widely re-elected

More than 24 million Algerians were called to the polls on Saturday for a presidential election that, as expected, resulted in the re-election of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, 78, for a second term. The electoral authority announced on Sunday that Tebboune was re-elected with 94.65% of the electors.

Algerians turned out very little, with a turnout of less than 50%. In December 2019, Tebboune was elected with 58% of the vote, but with a turnout of only 39.8%. Faced with the low turnout on Saturday, the Independent National Electoral Authority decided to extend the opening of polling stations by one hour.
