Parliamentary elections in Singapore: The opposition feels easy swinging

Berlin pelvis | After the only very short election campaign, the duration of ten days, from which the eternal ruling people’s party (PAP) always provides, Singapore chooses the new parliament on May 3. The only weekend campaigns were violent in the directed democracy of the city state. For the first time since 2015, the ranges of a public campaign were possible again. Five years ago, they still had to fail from the Apandemia of the Crown.

The Islamist preacher Nur Rosros has now caused excitement and unambiguous unity in the political limits of the party. The opposition worker (WP), according to Nur -Deros, who lives in neighboring Malaysia, adopted her claims for a larger number of rights to Muslims and antizrail policy. Hardliner and the founder of the homophobic white movement of Wee in multi-ethnic Singapore were asked to be strictly chosen by voters-Malays in accordance with religious criteria.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on Sunday to X: “We must all reject the policy of identity and should never mix the breed and religion with politics.” Activist -Democracy Kirsten Khan commented on her blog “Citizens:“ Singapore is our business and no one else. ” WP resolutely rejected the preacher’s claim to share his claims.

Religion is a sensitive topic in multi -religious Singapore and, like everything else, is strictly regulated. It also affects the elections. Thanks to the exquisite system, they seem very democratic. In the electoral districts of both individual candidates and groups of candidates compete, in which at least one applicant must belong to an ethnic minority.

The younger generation wants to reform

Political diversity is also falsified by the system of parliamentarians without a constituency. From the most of the law on voting inherited by the British, the opposition did not receive a single mandate, even if it reached 30 percent of the vote. In order for the system to seem to be deserving, leaders still receive mandates among the losers in the elections.

In 2020, the beneficiary with two places was a party of progress (PSP), founded by a former papal politician who, otherwise, would not win any mandates. The khan calls this system unfair, non -common and manipulative: “It is designed to deteriorate the ability of Singapore to create an open and democratic system.”

Even if there is no doubt about the victory of PAP, in the end, the opposition occurs only in the part of the constituency, you can count on the election result. The formula of the late founder of the autocratic state Lee Kuan Yu “I make you rich, you hold the flap” no longer works smoothly. In the latest elections, Pap lost almost nine percent. This causes the pain of a permanent ruling party, even if it still reached 61 percent in 2020. On the other hand, WP noted historical success with 10 mandates, which corresponds to a tenth of places.

The young generation wants social and democratic reforms. The government and dad suspect the influence of a democratically -minded young generation from Bangladesh on Myanmar and Thailand. Now Singapore talks about living matters, as well as whether PAP can best conduct crises and trade wars in the long run. It is also a vote for the trust of Prime Minister Wonge, which has been working only in May 2024.
