In Spain, to be able to drive optimally and safely, and without having to be fined by the various traffic officers, you must pay the taxes of the General Directorate of Traffic. This tribute refers to payment of established fees carry out certain administrative procedures related, as we have indicated above, to the circulation and documentation of vehicles and drivers in Spain.
We will then detail all the information on the different tariffs that exist and which must be paid to the General Directorate of Traffic. First of all, we will start with those related to vehicles, drivers and other specific procedures. Please note that the following prices have a Prices ranging from 8 to 55 eurosdepending on the Autonomous Community to which you belong.
Vehicle costs
- Vehicle registration: Every time we acquire a new vehicle, whether new or used, it must be registered in the register, just like any other temporarily deregistered car.
- Change of ownership of a vehicle: When a transfer of ownership of a vehicle is carried out, you should always inform the relevant authorities, otherwise this could lead to problems with the law.
- Permanent cancellation of a vehicle: Likewise, when we transport our “old four-wheeled friend” to the scrapyard or leave it out of circulation, we will have to notify it to permanently deregister it and pay DGT taxes.
- Temporary removal of a vehicle: at the moment we decide to temporarily deregister a vehicle, as happens in all options, it must be registered with the General Directorate of Traffic.
- Certificates of car characteristics: it will be necessary to request certificates which certify the technical characteristics of a vehicle, as well as its approval and various particularities.
Driver fees
- Get your driver’s license: in this case we must pay the fees to take the theoretical and practical exam, in addition to those necessary to obtain the circulation permit if passed.
- Driving license renewal: Another of the DGT fees that will have to be paid over time is the renewal of the driving license. A fee will be paid which will vary depending on the length of the renewal.
- Duplicate driving license: In the event of theft, loss or damage to your travel document, you must go to your nearest DGT office to make a duplicate.
- Driving license for special vehicles: in this case, you have to pay a fee to obtain a driving license for non-conventional vehicles, such as mopeds, tractors, etc.
- Change of address on driving license: If you decide to change your address, the driving license holder will have to pay the corresponding DGT fees.
- Procedures related to points recovery: If you have lost points, you must pay the fees to take the said course and thus recover the lost score on your driving license.
In this case, the procedures related to drivers generally vary between 20 and 60 euros, depending on the specific procedure and the area where you carry it out.
3. Prices for specific procedures
- Traffic History Report: this document is useful for knowing the administrative history of a vehicle or driver, and generally has an approximate price between 3 and 10 euros.
- Psychophysical aptitude exams: When it is necessary to carry out medical examinations to obtain or renew a driving license, in certain cases, fees are also paid for the administrative management of the examination.
- International driving license: To drive abroad, certain procedures require the payment of a fee.
- Authorizations for public transport or commercial vehicles: These permits are generally subject to specific fees, which may vary depending on the permit type and region.
How to pay DGT taxes online from the web?
- Access the DGT website: First of all, we will go to the official website of the DGT: www.dgt.es
- Select the procedure you want to perform: Subsequently, we will search for the section that corresponds to the process you are going to take, such as “driving license”, “vehicles” or “fees and payments”, among others. In each category, you can select the rate you plan to pay.
- Fill in the procedure details: You will need to fill out the forms with the requested information and the website will guide you step by step to complete all the required information.
- Generate the payment voucher (model 791): once the details of the procedure have been completed, the DGT will offer you pay the corresponding fees. This will generate a model 791 with details of the fees to be paid, the corresponding amount and a reference number.
- Select payment method: You can pay the fees online or at a bank.
- Confirmation and receipt of payment: After making the payment, if you made it online, you will receive a payment confirmation on screen and in the email. You must save or print the receipt as a receipt.
- Carrying out the procedure: Equipped with proof of payment, you will now be able to finalize the process that you had started with the DGT, such as changing ownership of a vehicle.
