El Corte Inglés is a legendary company in our country that has decided to take a decisive step in a significant change of direction, a true reference in our country with a history that is worth knowing: “El Corte Inglés takes its name from a small tailor’s shop founded in 1890 and located between Preciados, Carmen and Rompelanzas streets in Madrid. In 1935, Ramón Areces Rodríguez, supported by his uncle César Rodríguez, bought the tailor’s shop, thus beginning his business adventure. In 1939, they acquired a property located at 3, Preciados Street, in Madrid, to sell the ground floor, the first and part of the second. In June 1940, when the company had seven employees, Ramón Areces founded the company El Corte Inglés, with his uncle César Rodríguez as partner and president of the company. Between 1945 and 1946, the first renovation was carried out on the entire building, bringing the sales area to a total of 2,000 m2 spread over five floors; In this way, departmental sales were born, typical of a large warehouse. Between 1953 and 1955, the adjacent Preciados 5 building was incorporated. Over time, successive extensions and modifications were made in order to offer a modern image in line with the demands and needs of the company. The sixties were decisive for El Corte Inglés, as it began its expansion throughout the national territory with the inauguration of centers in Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, etc. Until the mid-90s, a phase of growth of the Group took place with Isidoro Álvarez as the main driving force, a stage marked by the diversification of its commercial activity, which began to take positions in other business sectors. The 80s were an intense decade for the Group that ended with the death of Ramón Areces on July 30, 1989. Since 1966, his nephew Isidoro Álvarez held the position of General Director, which allowed him to know the Group in depth.
