The current secretary general of the UGT, Pepe Álvarez, announced on Thursday in Barcelona that he would stand for a third and final term at the 44th Confederal Congress that the union will hold in the Catalan capital from November 25 to 27.
Born in March 1956 in the Asturian town of Belmonte de Miranda, Álvarez was first appointed general secretary of the UGT in March 2016, replacing Cándido Méndez, who had already led the union for 22 years.
Later, in May 2021, he was re-elected for a second term at the 43rd UGT Confederal Congress.
By presenting his candidacy for the 44th Congress, Álvarez opts for a third and final four-year term, since the union’s statutes limit the union’s general secretary to three terms.
This limitation was introduced at the 41st UGT Confederal Congress, held in April 2013, since until then there was no limitation in the Statutes.
