The general secretary of the UGT, Pepe Álvarez, announced this Thursday that he will seek a third term at the head of the union, so he will lead this union force until 2028. The UGT statutes set a limit of three terms, so it will be the last of Pepe Álvarez, who has led the union since March 2016, since he will stand again at the Confederal Congress to be held in Barcelona from November 25 to 27.
In a speech before the National Committee of the Catalan UGT, led by Camil Ros, Álvarez, 68, justified his decision to continue facing the challenges facing the organization. “It’s worth it,” he assured.
Álvarez said that after a period of consultations within the organization, he decided to opt for a new mandate, because “it is not appropriate to leave the union” now in a situation in which it would take “some time” to continue to perform “100%,” he said.
From the UGT, ‘EFE’ is assured that no one has expressed, at least for now, their intention to present an alternative candidacy to Álvarez, although it could be realized until the day the Congress begins.
The nominations, according to the rules of the Congress, must be approved by at least 15% of the delegates entitled to vote. At the Congress itself, the deadline for submitting nominations opens and the deadlines and deadlines for receiving the proposals and the subsequent vote, which will be nominal and secret, are set.
Álvarez’s retirement age (72) will be higher than that of his two predecessors in power, Nicolás Redondo (67) and Cándido Méndez (64), an issue that has already caused some internal disagreements, according to the sources consulted.
