Perelló proposes Berberoff as vice-president of the TS, who will leave the APM executive

The President of the Supreme Court and the General Council of the Judiciary, Isabel Perelló, communicated to the members this Monday her proposal to appoint the magistrate of the Third Chamber Dimitry Berberoff as vice-president of the TS.

Berberoff, a Supreme Court justice since 2018, was a lawyer at the Court of Justice of the European Union between 2007 and 2010 and a member of the Network of Experts in European Union Law.

He also has in-depth knowledge of how the
high court, since he was director of its technical office between 2014 and 2018.

Since 2019, he has been elected member of his Chamber of Government after appearing on the list of the Professional Order of the Judiciary.

He is currently vice-president of the APM, a position he will leave to devote himself entirely to the vice-presidency of the Supreme Court.

Some members of the progressive sector made it clear to Perelló last week that the vice president of the Supreme Court should not necessarily be the leader of a judicial organization, but rather give the position a neutral, institutional and non-associative image.

The progressive group, however, did not question the fact that the vice-presidency of the TS was occupied by a candidate from the conservative sector for a certain criterion of “compensation”, since President Perelló belonged to the Judges for Democracy.

Finally, Perelló obtained broad support for his candidate, who will leave his post on the APM Executive Commission in the coming days.

The appointment, which requires three fifths of the votes of the CGPJ Plenary, will take place on the 25th. It will be the first meeting of the new Council chaired by Isabel Perelló.

At the age of 55, Berberoff entered the judicial career through competitive examination in 1995 and was posted in Villena, Xátiva and, after obtaining the contentious-administrative specialization, at the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia.

He has been a professor at the International University of Catalonia and at the CSE Cisneros of the Complutense University and a collaborator of the EU Administrative Law Research Network. He is the author of more than 30 books on European Union law and administrative law.
