Iran is ready to work to restore the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA, the nuclear deal) if the parties to this agreement comply with it, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in his speech at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
“We are ready to work with the JCPOA participants if the obligations of the Joint Plan are fulfilled (by the parties to the agreement) fully and in good faith.” – said Pezeshkian.
The President noted that “this could be followed by a dialogue on other issues.”
Earlier, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said it was ready to start a new round of negotiations on nuclear issues during the current trip of Iranian politicians to the UN General Assembly in New York, if other parties are ready for it.
The 79th session of the UN General Assembly opened on September 10. It will culminate in a high-level week from September 24 to 30, which will bring together leaders and foreign ministers from around the world to present their vision of the international situation and outline directions for combating global challenges. The EU’s top diplomat is the coordinator of negotiations on the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which is designed to resolve the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme.
In 2015, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, France and Iran signed a nuclear deal, the JCPOA, which entailed the lifting of sanctions in exchange for restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program. In May 2018, the United States, under the leadership of President Donald Trump withdrew from the JCPOA and reinstated sanctions against Tehran. In response, Iran announced a gradual reduction of its obligations under the deal, abandoning restrictions on nuclear research, centrifuges and uranium enrichment levels.
