Piastri disobeyed McLaren… and that’s why he won in Baku: "I’m sorry about my engineer, but…"

This is the second victory of Oscar Piastri with McLaren. That of Baku was brilliant, once again, for this incredible pass he made to Charles Leclerc where no one expected it. And also because he didn’t listen to his track engineer’s instructions.

Oscar himself said it He disobeyed orders from the wall…and that’s why he won.

“I felt a little sorry for my engineering career because I basically tried to do it in the first stint and I ran out of tires. My engineer called me on the radio and said: “Let’s not do this anymore”but I ignored him on the next lap and went inside. “That’s what won me the race,” said the Australian.

He acknowledges that he took a very high risk, but that it turned out well: “It was high risk, high commitment.but that’s what I had to do to try to win the race, because I really wasn’t going to be very interested in finishing second.”

Once he had overtaken Charles, he defended himself brutally: “I knew that taking the lead would represent, say, 40% of the work, but that maintaining it was going to be 60%.

“I knew I was going to use the tires a lot to try to get ahead and I knew the impact it had on the first stint,” says Piastri, who shows he is capable of leading a team that aspires to everything like McLaren.
