Podemos will ask its bases if it should condition the PGE on the government’s break with Israel and lower rents

Podemos puts a price on legislative power. The secretary general of the purple formation, Ione Belarrawill ask party members whether or not they should repeal the General State Budgets (PGE) that the Government will present soon. The condition: that Spain breaks off its commercial relations with Israel and legally lowers rent prices by 40%. The consultation will be open between October 22 and 27.

The negotiation for the approval of the 2024 budgets will certainly be one of the most decisive in determining the duration of the legislature. In the socialist part of the government, in fact, there has been speculation for weeks that the approval of the annual accounts next January could give them enough oxygen to last three more years in the minority.

None of this will happen without the four Podemos deputies, needed to form a majority in Congress. According to Belarra’s thesis, “when only the PSOE leads the Government, the only measures it adopts are practically the same as those that the Popular Party could adopt”, he stressed. We see the entry of Rochenoire into Naturgy or the deportations of Sahrawi activists.

Very critical of the first year of the legislature and its legislative paralysis, the purple leader targeted the lack of influence of Sumar, a party which “even tried to infiltrate” a reduction in pensions for people benefiting from the subsidy for those over 52. This reduction, precisely, was canceled by Podemos at the start of the legislature.

Today, Belarra believes that the big battle of this government will be in the area of housing, which is why he is calling for a 40% reduction in rents and a ban on real estate speculation. “In this context, it is the least we can ask of this Government so that it can count on our support,” he stressed.

“Our organization must exercise its power to the fullest and demand that the government at least minimally respect the mandate of the elections,” Belarra told registrants following Monday’s Executive meeting.

Very insistent on the foreign policy of Pedro Sánchez, the deputy assures that “there are millions of honest people in Spain who cannot understand that the government is transforming us into accomplices of the the worst genocide in a centuryperpetrated by the terrorist State of Israel.” “No one understands that a year later, we have not been able to stop the sale, purchase and transit of weapons,” he criticized.

Those registered on Podemos will be able to vote between Tuesday 22 and Sunday 28 on the question asked by the party leadership.
