Poland has begun fortification work on the border with Russia, said the Prime Minister of the Republic, Donald Tusk.
“The construction of the Eastern Shield has begun! First job on the border with Russia.” — Tusk wrote on the social network X.
The resolution on the creation of the “National Deterrence and Defense Program – “Eastern Shield”, for which 10 billion zlotys (2.5 billion US dollars) was allocated in the period 2024-2028, was adopted by the Council of Ministers of Poland on June 10 at a retreat in Bialystok. According to a statement from the Polish Prime Minister’s Office, “the government intends to create a comprehensive defense infrastructure on NATO’s eastern flank to counter threats from Belarus and Russia.”
In recent years, Russia has seen unprecedented NATO activity along its western borders. The alliance is expanding initiatives and calling them “containing Russian aggression.” Moscow has repeatedly expressed concern about the buildup of alliance forces in Europe. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Moscow remains open to dialogue with NATO, but on equal terms, while the West must abandon the course of militarizing the continent.
