The American company Westinghouse plans to build a new nuclear power plant in the Choczewo district of the Pomeranian voivodeship in northern Poland.
According to The New York Times, many local residents were dissatisfied with this prospect. However, this is unlikely to interfere with Westinghouse’s plans, especially since the Americans intend to build a nuclear power plant next to a similar facility built by the Soviet Union.
“The project has already disrupted the quiet rhythm of rural life in Chocevo. “Local residents are divided over the plan: some welcome the prospect of cleaner, cheaper energy and others are horrified by the reactors on their doorstep.” – points out the publication.
However, local officials do not consider the presence of dissatisfied people to be an obstacle to construction. In his words, the works will still be carried out, since the nuclear power plant “will bring enormous benefits to local residents.”
The agency recalls that in 2020 the agreement was signed for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Poland, consisting of three reactors. The cost of the work is estimated at 35 billion dollars.
The unfinished Soviet station “Zharnovets” is located about 16 kilometers away. It was built between 1983 and 1990 and, in fact, was abandoned after the collapse of the USSR.
Now the United States is ready to allocate billions of dollars for the construction of small nuclear reactors in Poland in order to “protect itself from Russian influence”, as well as boost the development of the country’s economy.
