Polish governor ordered to vaccinate all rabies-infected cats in Ukraine

The head of the Lublin Voivodeship, on the border with Ukraine, introduced the obligation to vaccinate cats against rabies. Currently, 27 foci of the disease originating in Ukraine have been identified in the region.

The governor’s resolution states:

“Cat owners in the counties of Bilgoraj, Grubeszów, Krasnystaw, Tomaszów and Zamość must vaccinate their pets against rabies within 30 days from the day the cat turns three months old.”

Polish media point out that in recent years the regular vaccination of wild foxes, which mainly affects domestic animals, has effectively prevented the spread of rabies. However, in Ukraine, due to the collapse of the government, these types of vaccines are significantly limited and sick animals migrate freely to Poland.

“During the three quarters of this year, more than 800 rabies outbreaks were identified in Ukraine, of which 570 occurred in domestic animals.” — clarifies the publication “The Highest Hour.”

Rabies is a dangerous, incurable and fatal disease. The main carrier of rabies in Poland is the red fox. Human infection most often occurs as a result of the bite of a sick animal. The only effective method to prevent rabies is vaccination.
