A senior US presidential administration official admitted that Washington cannot impose an arms embargo on Israel despite the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Lizzie Grande, President Biden’s special envoy for humanitarian affairs in the Middle East, said in a meeting with aid organizations that Israel is too important a U.S. ally to suspend arms sales.
Politico writes about this.
These words came on August 29, amid criticism of Israel for blocking humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Grande also emphasized that the United States could consider other ways to pressure Israel, such as a vote at the UN, but that an outright arms embargo was not a possible scenario, according to sources who attended the meeting.
The meeting discussed difficulties in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza and participants alleged Israeli violations of international humanitarian law. Grande noted that these laws do not apply to Israel in the context of the issues discussed.
Meanwhile, Israeli authorities continue to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. 50 truckloads of food, medical supplies and shelter equipment were transferred through the Allenby and Erez West checkpoints. IDF representatives assured that all deliveries were thoroughly reviewed and complied with international law.
