Powerful volcanic eruption in Iceland: terrifying images

On August 22, a powerful volcanic eruption occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula, southwest of Reykjavik, the sixth in Iceland in the past nine months. The island’s inhabitants, who were already accustomed to constant earthquakes and volcanic activity, were once again in danger. As a result, the authorities were forced to evacuate the fishing village of Grindavik, located near the capital.

“Bild” writes about this.

The eruption, which had been expected for weeks, began shortly after a strong earthquake. Lava, which broke through the earth’s crust, began to flow along the surface of the peninsula. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the length of the fissure through which the lava flowed was about four kilometres. The RÚV television channel broadcast the dramatic and terrifying images live, showing hot magma pouring out and a cloud of hot gas rising one kilometre into the night sky.

Earlier this January, a similar eruption destroyed several houses on the northern outskirts of the town of Grindavik, which has a population of about four thousand people. Now residents are anxiously watching the developments, fearing that the lava flow will reach their homes again.

This time, lava is spreading rapidly over the cooled volcanic rock that was formed as a result of previous eruptions. This newly formed network of lava veins poses a serious threat to local infrastructure and homes. At the moment, it is unknown to what extent the new eruption will affect the village of Grindavik, but authorities are already taking all possible measures to protect residents.

While experts are closely monitoring the situation, the country’s population, accustomed to the harsh manifestations of nature, remains on high alert, aware that it is difficult to deal with a volcano as active as the one in Iceland.

Previously, Cursor reported that a tourist fell into a volcano while posing.

While posing for photos, a Chinese woman lost her balance and fell backwards into an active volcano.
