PP files appeal against amnesty law before Constitutional Court

The Popular Party filed its appeal for unconstitutionality against the amnesty law, approved last May by Congress, to end the criminal consequences of the independence process.

The secretary general of the PP, Cuca Gamarra, announced on Thursday the registration of the appeal, which he considers “necessary” and a “moral obligation” of the Popular Party, “the only state party that remains in the parliamentary arc” of Spain, as described by Gamarra.

Gamarra assured that the Popular Party has always defended that the amnesty was “unconstitutional” and “immoral” because, as he said, its only postulate was “to grant immunity to a political caste so that Sánchez is president of the government of the Spanish Government.”

Coinciding with the opening of the judicial year

The autonomous communities governed by the PP are also considering appealing the amnesty law, within a period that expires on September 11, given that the rule was published in the Official State Gazette on June 11 and they have three months to appeal.

The “popular” will also try to exclude from the deliberation three of the twelve magistrates of the Constitutional Court (TC): its president, Cándido Conde-Pumpido, and the two members from the government of Pedro Sánchez, the former minister Juan Carlos Campo – who already requested this week to deviate from the constitutional provisions on this norm – and the former general director of Moncloa Laura Díez.

The PP released a message confirming the registration of its appeal to the minutes of the TC before King Felipe VI opened the 2024-2025 judicial year this afternoon in the plenary hall of the Supreme Court, the first with a renewed General Council of the Judiciary after spending almost six years with an expired mandate due to the lack of agreement between the PP and the PSOE. Today, the event was chaired by the new president of the Judiciary, Isabel Perelló.
