Prague refuses to negotiate with Bratislava over Slovakia’s attitude towards Russia

The resumption of negotiations with the Slovak government is not on the agenda. This was announced by the Czech Foreign Minister, Jan Lipavsky, on November 25.

According to him, what is happening in relations with Slovakia is related to the conflict in Ukraine and Bratislava’s attitude towards it. In this sense, he recalled the October interview of the Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, with Russian state television and pointed out that in the current situation, high-level contacts with Russia do not make sense.

“I am trying to limit Russian influence as much as possible and not allow Russia to divide the European continent… Contacts with the Russian Federation at such a high level do not make much sense at the moment, because nothing else is heard except that they have the right to do this and they will do it. And this is a completely distorted interpretation of international law. So I don’t think it’s on the agenda, but that’s up to the Prime Minister. (Petra FialaEADaily) and in this he agreed with Robert Fico”, – said Lipavsky.

When asked if Fico was ruining the efforts of the Czech Republic and perhaps other European countries to counter “Russian influence” in Europe, the minister replied that he did not see it that way.

“My responsibility is the Czech Republic. For the Czech Republic to be safe, we need European security if we take individual measures. “I am glad that the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic is not making these types of phone calls right now.” – he pointed out.

Recall that Slovakia, with the arrival of Robert Fico’s government in late autumn 2023, changed its attitude to the conflict in Ukraine and refused to supply weapons to kyiv. Furthermore, Bratislava advocates restoring relations with Russia. At the same time, the Czech Republic continues to insist on continuing military operations and achieving “victory” over the Russian Federation. Disagreements between Prague and Bratislava led the Czech Republic to end intergovernmental consultations with Slovakia.
