BANGKOK – The Thai Constitutional Court suspended the position of Prime Minister Pathyngtorn Shinavatra after his telephone conversation with the former Cambodian leader Hun Sen leaked to the public. Paetongtar received increased pressure, demanding him to resign in relation to the scandal.
Record shots, where Patongta called Hong Saint “Uncle” and criticized the Thai military commander, caused public anger. The petition of his dismissal from the post of Prime Minister is currently considered by the court.
This scandal can make Paetongtarn the third politician in the shinwatra clan, who lost power before completing his term of office. His government coalition was shocked by the subtle majority after the main conservative ally left her two weeks ago.
The Constitutional Court gave 7-2 votes to justify him when they considered the case of his dismissal, and he had 15 days to transfer his defense.
Meanwhile, representatives of the Prime Minister will act as temporary leaders of the state. Nevertheless, Paetongtar will remain in the Cabinet of Ministers of Culture, a new purpose after the rearrangement of the office, which was transferred a few hours before its suspension.
On Tuesday (1/7/2025), Patongta apologized again, adding that the purpose of his phone call with Hun Sen was “more than 100%… for the country.”
The phone call was about border disputes between the two countries – despite decades, tension increased again from the end of May, when the Cambodian soldier was killed.
