Procession of the Virgin of Villaviciosa in Cordoba: schedule, route and news

September continues to reveal glories and this weekend brings to the streets of the San Lorenzo neighborhood an ancient and established devotion, that of the Virgin of Villaviciosa.

During the procession you will see the highest point of the sculptural ensemble of the processional base of the Virgin, with two new images which are added to those of Hernando and the Portuguese knight.

In baked and polychrome terracotta, the Cordovan image maker Manuel Luque Bonillo represented the Archangels San Gabriel and San Rafael, author of the other two works and designer of the base.

The Archangel Saint Gabriel represents the “Let it be done to me” of the Virgin Mary at the Annunciation, which is the symbol and motto of the Primitive Brotherhood of Our Lady of Villaviciosa, Patron Saint of Nursing. The Archangel Saint Raphael, Custos of Córdoba, has been closely linked to this devotion for centuries.

The parish of San Lorenzo is the starting point of the itinerarywhich will take the Virgin through the streets of Santa María de Gracia, Virgen de Villaviciosa, Buen Suceso, Jesús Nazareno.

In this place, in the Hospitaller Church of Jesus Nazarene, a station will take place before Blessed Cristóbal de Santa Catalina, head of this brotherhood. This religious man had a strong devotion to the Virgin, which is why this beautiful gesture is repeated year after year with all its meaning.

The procession will then continue through San Agustín, Montero, San Juan de Letrán, Jesús del Calvario and San Lorenzo streets to re-enter his temple.

The musical group of Maria Santísima de la Esperanza will once again perform a repertoire based on the Virgin of Villaviciosa cautious and measured in detail, as has been the custom in recent years, on the basis of the 7:30 p.m. Sunday, September 15.

Fernando Chiachío will be the foreman. There will be good weather: Aemet predicts that the sky will be partly cloudy and temperatures will range from a maximum of 35 degrees to a minimum of 17 degrees.

The procession of Villaviciosa is one of the fundamental events of the end of summer around the patron saint of Cordoba in the 16th century, before the current one, Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta, became the patron saint of Cordoba.
