Olive production forecasts are improving, which will double and with them we begin to glimpse the end of the oil crisis that has been suffocating Spanish consumers for years. Everything indicates that it will be from October, in the face of the new season, that we will begin to see a considerable drop in the prices of what has come to be defined as “liquid gold“.
More specifically, it is expected that produce between 1.4 and 1.7 million tons of oil in Spain, so it is possible that a liter will cost around five euros. Something that will be a relief in the pockets of the Spaniards, after seeing it at 12 euros. However, producers warn that if the rate drops further, they will work at a loss.
A question that worries especially those who work the olive tree in a traditional way, such as Cooperative of San Sebastian de Guadalcanal, in Seville. Its president, Manuela Roque, assured Al Rojo Vivo that there “all the work done on the olive tree is practically artisanal”, which represents “quite a lot of money” for the farmer.
In this context, he hopes that the increase in production “does not result in a sudden drop in prices” And in Spain, in their eyes, this product has been sold “at an excessively cheap price.” Of course, he is optimistic when he assures that a “better campaign” is coming than the previous one, and that in his case, it is expected that there will be between “six million and six and a half million kilos” that “can enter the Cooperative” that he directs.
The climate, an oasis for the olive tree
It is precisely the climate that has allowed the forecasts for the olive tree to be positive. Specifically, “the rains of Holy Week and the month of April,” says Roque, “were great” for the olive tree, because “it was needing that amount of water.” In this regard, however, he is cautious because it is “a traditional olive grove.” They depend “only” on what comes “from heaven”.
