Descendants of Gustave Eiffel, the engineer who designed the Eiffel Tower, have opposed Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo’s decision to permanently retain the Olympic rings installed on the tower’s facade for the 2024 Olympic Games.

On August 31, Anne Hidalgo said in an interview with the newspaper “Ouest-France” that the Olympic rings will remain on the Eiffel Tower and that she has received permission to do so from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
“The Eiffel Tower, which has become a symbol of Paris and France, should not be associated only with an event like the Olympic Games; it has a broader meaning,” said Yeatman-Eiffel.
According to Yeatman-Eiffel, the tower’s facade is used to mark important events and he is concerned that the tower is only associated with one event.
According to BFMTV, Eiffel’s other grandchildren are also opposed to the idea of keeping the rings on the tower permanently.
It is worth recalling that five Olympic rings were installed on the Eiffel Tower in Paris on June 7, 50 days before the start of the 2024 Olympic Games. Made from recycled steel, this 30-tonne structure is located on the south side of the tower and faces the River Seine. The diameter of each ring is 9 metres.
