Public figures demanded a ceasefire in Ukraine from the German government

A group of German politicians, businessmen, scientists and public figures published an open letter on Sunday to mark the 85th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, calling on French and German authorities to make efforts to achieve an early ceasefire in Ukraine. The Berliner Zeitung newspaper published an open letter signed by 28 German citizens.

“September 1, the day the Second World War began with the German attack on Poland, reminds us that we must stop and demand that the guns finally fall silent in the ongoing conflict between Russia, Ukraine and NATO. The risk of the world falling into the abyss of nuclear war increases every day. We cannot accept the fact that tens of thousands of lives are being sacrificed, even though there is clearly no military solution to this conflict. Let us show solidarity with the Ukrainians and Russians who are being pushed into this conflict! We demand: lay down your arms!” – says the letter.

The authors of the open letter called on the governments of Germany and France, as well as European partners, to develop and transmit specific initiatives to Russia and Ukraine.

“The goal should be a ceasefire and then peace negotiations without preconditions… Security can only be achieved together! The memory of September 1, 1939 strengthens us in our urgent call: without peace, everything is nothing!” – says the statement from the so-called “New Beginning Group”.
