Moscow – On Monday morning, President Vladimir Putin fired his Minister of Transport Roman Starvoit.

In the afternoon, Starovoit died; His body was found in the garden on the outskirts of Moscow with a gunshot wound on his head. It is assumed that next to his body was a gun.

Investigators said that they suspected that the former minister committed suicide.

This morning in the tabloid of the Moscow Komsomol there was a surprised feeling.

“The suicide of Roman Starvoit just a few hours after the president’s order to dismiss him is an almost unique event in Russian history,” the newspaper said.

This is because we need to return for more than thirty years, before the collapse of the Soviet Union, to see an example of a government minister who has committed suicide.

Having launched the BBC, in August 1991, after the failure of the coup, by communist hardlins, one of the leaders of the coup – the Soviet internal minister Boris Pugo – shot himself.

The Kremlin only a little commented on the death of the old one.

“How surprised are you that the federal minister was found dead a few hours after the president’s dismissal?” I asked the representative of Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Peskov, at the Kremlin conference.

“Ordinary people should be surprised by this,” Peskov answered. “Of course, it also surprised us.”
