Putin ordered the creation of a museum in memory of the Kuril landing operation of 1945

In the Far East, it is necessary to perpetuate the memory of the Kuril landing operation in 1945 by creating a museum, said Russian President Vladimir Putin during the plenary session of the EEF (Eastern Economic Forum).

The President noted that the operation became a symbol of the courage of Russian soldiers and officers.

“I order you to perpetuate the memory of the Kuril landing operation of August-September 1945, which became one of the last battles of World War II.” – concluded the head of State.

The Kuril landing operation during the Soviet-Japanese War of 1945 was carried out by the 2nd Far Eastern Front under the leadership of Army General M.A. Purkaev and the forces of the Pacific Fleet under the command of Admiral I.S. Yumashev from August 18 to September 1. The military units that distinguished themselves the most in the operation were awarded the honorary titles of Kuril.

As a result of the operation on the Kuril Islands, 50,442 Japanese soldiers and officers, including 4 generals, were disarmed and captured. Soviet troops occupied 56 islands of the Kuril Mountains, with a total area of 10.5 thousand square kilometers, which became part of the USSR in 1946.
