Yemen: US attacks Houthi rebel facilities
The United States carried out several airstrikes overnight Saturday into Sunday targeting Houthi rebel weapons storage facilities in Yemen, the Pentagon said. The Houthi channel Al-Massira reported three attacks in several neighborhoods in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen.
The sophisticated weapons in question were used by the Iran-backed group to attack civilian and military ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, a senior US official told Agence France-Presse.
The Houthis, who control large areas of Yemen, have been carrying out attacks against Israel and ships allegedly linked to them for months, claiming to act in solidarity with Hamas, which has opposed Israel in the Gaza Strip for a year.
In response, the United States and the United Kingdom periodically carry out attacks against Houthi installations, but have so far failed to destroy the movement’s operational capacity.
In mid-October, the United States indicated that it had attacked the Houthis for the first time using B-2 stealth strategic bombers.
