lFrance Insoumise (LFI) and Jean-Luc Mélenchon fascinate numerous commentators who praise the latter’s talent, his political sense, his skill and his strategic vision. This is paradoxical, since the 2024 election results do not go in this direction and the image of the movement, as well as that of its leader, has deteriorated considerably in public opinion in recent months. The extensive post-election survey carried out by Ipsos for The worldThe Sciences Po political research centre, the Montaigne Institute and the Jean Jaurès Foundation are witnesses to this and allow us to document this evolution.
The French respondents are particularly critical of LFI: 74% believe it is a far-left group, an increase of 9 points compared to the “Fractures Françaises” survey conducted by Ipsos-Sopra Steria in September 2023, 72% that it fuels violence (+ 12 points) and 69% that it is dangerous for democracy (+ 12 points). On the other hand, in the positive dimensions, the levels are low and declining: only 36% consider that this party is ready to take unpopular measures if they are good for the country (- 2 points in one year), 26% that it is close to their concerns (- 3 points), 22% that it is capable of governing the country (- 6 points) and 22% that the society it defends is generally the one in which they would like to live (- 3 points).
As for the idea that it would be unfairly demonized, only 25% of those surveyed agree with it. In short, this formation has become extremist and arouses very strong rejection. It should be noted: whatever the sociological variable analyzed, critical judgments are always majority and massive, with little deviation from the average except among two populations: young people and, especially, young people aged 18 to 24 (50% ” only “ (51% believe that La France insoumise is dangerous for democracy and 51% believe that it fuels violence), and French Muslims. Among the latter, the assessments are positive: 75% believe that it does not incite violence, 76% that it is not dangerous for democracy and 70% that it is close to their concerns.
De-extremization of the registered nurse
Politically, if the rejection of LFI is extremely strong among supporters of the former presidential majority, those of the Les Républicains (LR) and the National Rally (RN) parties – between 85% and 90% of negative opinions – it is also strong among supporters of the Socialist Party (PS) on certain key dimensions: 69% in particular consider it a far-left party, 68% believe it fuels violence and 57% that it is dangerous for democracy. Something to challenge.
