Record number of centenarians in 2024 with 2,110, 84% women

The number of centenarians in Castile and León has increased a record in April 2024. In all, 2,110 citizens of the Community were already more than a century old, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics. Among them, Most of them were womens. Specifically, 84 percent, compared to 16 percent of men.

It is the third region with a greater number of residents reaching the age of one hundred, behind Madrid (2,660) and Catalonia (2,761). However, Castilla y León tops the list if we take into account the proportion of centenarians in relation to the total population. In fact, eight of its provinces –all except Valladolid – lead the highest rates in Spain with Lugo and Orense.

The highest general life expectancy – in Castile and León is one of the highest and is over 83 years old– assumes that its inhabitants are at the forefront in terms of longevity. Thus, in recent years, the number of inhabitants reaching the age of a century has gradually increased. In the Community, this figure has doubled compared to twenty years ago, but forecasts suggest that in fifteen years the data will also be multiplied by two. INE estimates show that in 2039 there will be more than 4,000 centenarians in the region, while at the national level they will exceed 46,000.

The province with the highest percentage of people in three-digit ages relative to its total census is Soria, with 100 people per 100,000 inhabitants -this is also the highest figure in Spain-, while the one with the lowest figure is in Valladolid, with 50. In absolute numbers, León is the one with the largest population having celebrated one hundred candles, with 413, followed by Salamanca, which has 332.
