red notice in Castellón and risk in Teruel and Tarragona up to 250 l/m2

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has raised to red level the warning in the northern interior of the province of Castellón and its southern coast due to very intense precipitation which could accumulate 180 liters per square meter in twelve hours. “Extreme danger! Only cross the area if strictly necessary!”, warns Aemet in his X account.

The warning is also active orange level on the north and south coast of Castellón and in the northern interior of the province due to precipitation that could accumulate 40 liters per square meter in one hour and 100 l/m2 in twelve hours. The rest of the province of Castellón, as well as the coast of the province of Valencia, are under yellow alert for storms that could be accompanied by hail and accumulate 20 liters per square meter in one hour.

The precipitation of locally torrential intensity which affects this Thursday the province of Castellón, whose northern coast and interior are under red watch, is already accumulating 200 liters per square meter in Tirig or 176 l/m2 in Catí, both in the Alt Maestrat region. This is what the Valencian Meteorological Association (Avamet) indicates.

“A static convective system (SCM) distributes very intense rains and storms, continually regeneratingsomething that has already happened in recent days in other regions of Spain. The interaction between local orography and the east-southeast flow, as well as the instability at altitude, allows the development of these very organized convective structures which usually deliver authentic deluges”, warns Samuel Biener of Weatherized.

“According to the latest updates of our reference model, in the coming hours the convective system will continue to bring torrential rain in the northern regions of Castellón, extending to the northeast of Teruel and the south of Tarragona“, warns the specialist.

The Emergency Coordination Center (CCE) has activated the red rain alert throughout the coast and north of the province of Castellón. Very intense storms occur in Castellón, with accumulations of more than 100 liters per square meter in a few hours in an area between Vall d’Alba and Els Ports and Tinença de Benifassà.

As the day progresses, thunderstorms will gain in intensity and extent throughout Catalonia, affecting the provinces of Tarragona, Barcelona and Girona. Rainfall will also intensify in the provinces of Cadiz, Seville and Malaga.

AEMET maintains orange alerts activated due to heavy rains in the countryside of Cádiz, Alto Tajo and the province of Teruel, and yellow alerts in eastern Castilla y León, the Ribera Alta del Ebro, in the south of the province of Huesca and throughout the province of Zaragoza.

On Friday, the instability will move towards Portugal, “which will again locally cause heavy showers, with new thunderstorms, in the western provinces of Andalusia and also in Extremadura”, concludes Biener. “In the Mediterranean, the atmosphere will not completely stabilize. We still hope showers in Catalonia, the north of the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islandswithout excluding some forts north of Castellón and south of Tarragona.”
